Ludwig Regular Collar Timpani HeadsBe careful when removing old timpani headsPedal type timpani tuning mechanisms are spring loaded. The pedal will move to the toe down forward position - do not try to hold it back. Also, do not adjust the balancing spring tension. When replacing head, the opposite reaction will take place. It is recommended to use a small dab of Vaseline Petroleum Jelly on the threads of the key rods for lubrication. Be sure to clean the bearing edge of the bowl. It should be smooth to the touch. If possible, apply a very thin film of paraffin wax to the bearing edge before replacing heads.Selecting your timpani headsPlease read the information below for timpani head selection.Regular Collar Heads - pre 1981Ludwig timpani manufactured before 1981 take 'regular' collar heads. Regular heads pull sharply down, close to the bowl perimeter, with the chrome plated counter hoop fitting closely around the bowl. Regular collar heads measure approximately one inch larger the bowl perimeter.Extended Collar heads - post 1981Extended Collar heads used on Ludwig timpani manufactured after 1981, extend approximately one inch beyond the bowl perimeter, with the chrome plated counter hoop being about two inches greater in diameter than the bowl. Extended collar heads measure approximately 2 inches larger than the bowl diameter.Sizing Ludwig Timpani HeadsLudwig heads are sized according to the size of the timpani. A 26 inch Ludwig timpani is made to fit a 26 inch timpani. In fact, the actual measurement will be somewhat larger. Remember, a 26 inch Ludwig timpani head will fit a 26 inch bowl but will not measure 26 inches. It will measure approximately 27 inches for a regular collar head and approximately 28 inches for an extended collar head.

Ludwig Timpani Heads are manufactured to exacting standards and produce the warm tone and resonance that has long been associated with Ludwig timpani. Available in white or clear. Extended Collar heads will fit all Ludwig drums made after 1978, and some professional models manufactured prior to 1978. Regular Collar heads will fit the Standard, Universal, and Machine Series timpani made prior to 1978. Please contact us for help in choosing the correct head size for your timpani.
